For this year’s Met Gala, themed Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, Alia Bhatt turned heads in an elegant ensemble that paid homage to her Indian heritage. Opting for a departure from conventional Western attire, she donned a custom-designed mint-green saree by renowned Indian couturier Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The sari, adorned with intricate hand-embroidered florals using silk floss, glass beading, and semi-precious gemstones, featured a majestic 23-foot-long train.
Expressing her excitement about the ensemble, Bhatt emphasized, "What drew me to this look was the sheer audacity of it—how it merges traditional craftsmanship with avant-garde aesthetics. Sabyasachi is known for his dedication to bringing old-world charm and modern sophistication together. This seemed like the perfect choice to encapsulate the theme of this year’s Met Gala."
The designer added, "I am honored to create India’s signature garment, a sari. Handcrafted from techniques handed down over generations and mastered during a lifetime of effort for Alia, it represents the history and pride of Indian craftsmanship that I have dedicated my career to promoting, protecting, and preserving." Sabyasachi’s creation paid tribute to the theme and marked a milestone for the Indian designer on fashion’s biggest night of the year.

For those unaware, the Met Gala 2024 was a celebration of the Costume Institute's latest exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. In the ode, the attendees embraced the official dress code, The Garden of Time. Furthermore, this immersive exhibit transported guests through centuries of fashion history. After all, it featured a curated selection of approximately 250 rare items from the Costume Institute's permanent collection.
