Britney Spears Comeback?! Charli XCX Confirms She Wrote Her Some Songs... So What Happened?!

Charli XCX finally addressed those rumors that she wrote new songs with Britney Spears!

Earlier this year, reports claimed the Womanizer singer was working on a new album and teamed up with two big hitmakers. Multiple outlets revealed her team got Charli to write music for Britney! Julia Michaels reportedly was asked to work on some new songs, too. Given their track record of writing pop hits, we understand why Brit Brit's team wanted their help!

But cue the record scratch! After the news broke, the pop star wasted no time. She shut down the rumors on Instagram about her "turning to random people to do a new album." "Random people?!" We wouldn't call Julia and Charli — two very talented and successful songwriters and performers in the industry — "random people!" Ouch! Britney then told fans she would "never return to the music industry." Damn.

But was Britney fibbing to fans?? Kinda…

Charli confirmed Monday night on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen she did work on new music for the Oops I Did It Again artist! However, she says Britney was not "a part of the process" at any point. She didn't even record what Charli wrote! So it sounds like Brit’s team spear-headed this potential pop comeback — or at least tried to! When asked about the collaboration, the Von Dutch artist explained:

"Um… So… Well… Yes? But — it leaked to the press. Britney then did this post where she was like, 'I don't have random people write for me.' And I was like, 'Oh. OK. Go off.' So I don't know that she was a part of the process. Her team were running before they could walk. Britney probably has a lot of other projects that she's focusing on. So I did get asked but I don't know if it's real."

Well, it was “real” enough that Charli went to Malibu to write songs with Britney's team! But sadly, the Crossroads actress didn't record the material:

"The team were present… But she didn't record it. She obviously didn't."

Despite how things went down, there seem to be no hard feelings on Charli's end. She insisted it would still be a "dream come true" to have Britney record one of her songs one day… if she's ever ready to return to the music business again. We certainly hope that happens! Everyone, keep your fingers crossed that we get a collaboration between Charli and Britney someday! Could you imagine the banger those two would create together?! OMG!
